Biography

Dr. Bauer is a passionate physician and educator with special expertise in critical care medicine, trauma care and general surgery. He currently serves as the Surgical ICU Medical Director at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center.

Dr. Bauer greatly enjoys teaching at the bedside while also highlighting new technologies and scientific evidence. He still aims to be a general surgeon in a highly specialized world. Dr. Bauer is also the Program Director of the Honor Health Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and has trained several Valley physicians.

Dr. Bauer received his M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York, and completed residency training in general surgery at St. Joseph Exempla in Denver, Colo. He then pursued a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Parkland Memorial-UT Southwestern Medical Center. He is board certified in both areas and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Bauer has a diverse practice that includes trauma, emergency general surgery, and critical care. He also maintains a busy elective practice with a focus in robotic surgery and complex care. His approach to medicine is focused on highly individualized treatment plans informed by scientific evidence and the biopsychosocial model of medicine. He helps students learn how to be thorough in their approach to patient care while also practicing humanity and compassionate care.

Dr. Bauer believes in teaching the classic practice of medicine alongside the modern tools and techniques. He is passionate about physiology, physical exam and the evidence based practice of medicine. He helps learners to discover better practice of medicine through personal growth. At the University of Rochester, he became a practitioner of the biopsychosocial model of medicine and shares this with his learners. His teaching rounds are known for the Socratic style and broad exposure to many aspects of medicine.

Above all else he loves surgery and the scalpel and tries to pass this on to all of his students.

Research Interests & Focus

Dr. Frank Bauer is an M.D. physician with board certifications in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He is a passionate educator of surgery and the Program Director of the HonorHealth Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.
His research has focused on specialized techniques in surgery, chest wall reconstruction and surgical simulation. Future research includes investigating tolvaptan use for SIADH of TBI and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in the ICU setting.
