$70,000 raised in “Steppin’ Up Against Pancreatic Cancer™” walk, surpassing expectations

300 participants walk over 1 million steps for pancreatic cancer research at HonorHealth Research Institute

Tempe, Ariz. — Nov. 26, 2024 —
The Seena Magowitz Foundation and HonorHealth Research Institute are thrilled to announce the success of the “Steppin’ Up Against Pancreatic Cancer™” walk, where over 300 participants gathered, both virtually and in-person at ASU’s Mountain America Stadium, to raise more than $70,000 for pancreatic cancer research.

This event exceeded expectations, with participants collectively taking more than 1 million steps in solidarity with those afflicted with pancreatic cancer. By directly supporting cutting-edge research and clinical trials, pancreatic cancer patients will have more treatment options.

“Every step taken in this walk is a step closer to hope and healing,” said Roger E. Magowitz, founder of the Seena Magowitz Foundation. “This incredible community of survivors, supporters, and advocates stand as a testament to the power of unity in our fight against pancreatic cancer.”

The event highlighted the spirit of the community and its commitment to progress.

ASU Professor Stan Vitikas, event chair and a 16-year pancreatic cancer survivor, shared, “This event holds profound meaning for me and for everyone touched by pancreatic cancer. It’s about standing together — survivors, supporters, families and friends — united in strength and hope. Walking side by side, we didn’t just raise awareness and funds; we took powerful steps toward a future where no one must face this disease alone.”

Erkut Borazanci, M.D., Medical Director of the Oncology Research Division at HonorHealth Research Institute, said this inaugural walk sets the stage for future collaborations among the Seena Magowitz Foundation, HonorHealth Research Institute and ASU.

“The fact that our participants collectively amassed more than 1 million steps is truly amazing, given that this is just the first year of what we hope will be an annual event,” Dr. Borazanzi said. “The Seena Magowitz Foundation is a driving force in our efforts to develop new treatments for pancreatic cancer though our clinical trials, giving hope and answers to our patients and their loved ones for longer, happier lives.”

Reflecting on the impact of the event, Charlotte Pollack, Babbo Italian Eatery owner, the event’s presenting sponsor, noted, “We are so proud to have been a part of this important event. Seeing everyone come together, each step felt like a tribute to those we’ve lost and a beacon of hope for the future.”

The success of the “Steppin’ Up Against Pancreatic Cancer™” walk was made possible by the support of generous sponsors, including:
