Alvaro “Alfie” Calderon Verdugo, Clinical Data Abstractor

Question: How long have you been with HonorHealth?
Answer: 3 years

Q: At what point in your early life did you decide you wanted to go into a career in research?
A: I didn’t think of working in research in early life, but as faith would have it, I got a job as a Clinical Research Coordinator. From the very first day I set foot at the HonorHealth Research Institute, I knew this would continue to be my career, and for the Research Institute to be my home.

Q: What is a work-related accomplishment you are proud of?
A: In the words of my supervisor Mindy Blake, “I am proud of Alfie’s growth in the last year, learning the finance side of the business. Alfie has taken initiative to understand and learn the business. He has helped increase the COV rate, audited over 250 sponsored trials, has really helped support the clinic data entry and supported the changes with processes across the Institute. I am very proud of his efforts, teamwork and ability to flex, pivot and learn.”

Q: Why is it so important to encourage younger and diverse groups to pursue a career in research?
A: I believe it provides great opportunities for development and empowerment in youth individuals. Also, working with diverse groups helps develop new perspectives and approaches to research, this is because everyone brings their own unique experience and perspective to problem solving.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself?
A: I would like to say THANK YOU to each and every one at the Research Institute who have taught me so much. Thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to work next to such a wonderful team of people that provides excellent care to our patients every day.
