Desteny Grimm
HonorHealth Research Institute Research Support Specialist
Question: How long have you been with HonorHealth?
Answer: I’ve been with HonorHealth Research Institute for less than a year, supporting oncology research for Dr. Justin Moser and Dr. Erkut Borazanci.
Q: At what point in your early life did you decide you wanted to go into a career in research?
A: My interest in medicine started when I was young. My mom worked in sterile processing in the operating room and helped me get an opportunity to shadow an anesthesiologist. I fell in love with the science behind every procedure. Later, I joined the U.S. Air Force to serve my country and help pay for school. While serving overseas in Korea and Japan, I continued my biology studies online at Arizona State University.
When my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer, it became personal. I wanted to understand how cancer develops, how it’s treated, and what more could be done to help patients like her. That experience, paired with my love for science, led me to a career in oncology research.
Q: What is a work-related accomplishment you are proud of?
A: I’m proud of supporting oncology research that directly impacts patient care. I help coordinate and streamline research operations, facilitate communication between investigators and industry sponsors, and ensure that studies move efficiently from concept to activation. Building strong partnerships and helping bring new therapies to patients is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
Q: Why is it so important to encourage younger and diverse groups to pursue a career in research?
A: Representation matters, especially in science and healthcare. When younger and more diverse voices enter research, they bring new perspectives, ideas, and empathy that drive innovation and improve patient care. My experience in the U.S. Air Force taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and serving a mission greater than myself. Encouraging others to see how their unique backgrounds and experiences can strengthen science is something I’m passionate about.
