Question: How long have you been with HonorHealth?

Answer:  More than 3 years.

Q: At what point in your early life did you decide you wanted to go into a career in research?

A: My dad was a rocket scientist (Atlas and Titan) and computer engineer (Defense Department mainframes), and my mom was a registered nurse (working in hospitals and providing us kids with free home healthcare). So, I’ve always had an understanding and respect for science and medicine. During my 30-year career in Journalism, I was the Science and Environment reporter for 9 years at The Arizona Republic. I interviewed dozens of the world’s top scientists, including paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey, oceanographic explorer and filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau (son of Jacques Cousteau), and astronomer and planetary scientist Carl Sagan (twice).

Q: What is a work-related accomplishment you are proud of?

A: Besides letting the world know through dozens of international press releases about the exceptional work of our talented and caring teams at HonorHealth Research Institute, as well as writing and compiling the Research Institute’s Annual Reports, I have found great satisfaction in telling the heroic stories of dozens of our “Grateful Patients.”

Q: Why is it so important to encourage younger and diverse groups to pursue a career in research?

A:  Diversity, Equity and Inclusion have been unfortunately vilified for dour political purposes in recent years, and yet these qualities are exactly what we need to create a just and progressive society; one that fulfills the promise of making our nation “a more-perfect union” and helping our world to not only survive but to thrive with no one being left behind. We must pass the baton of freedom, of unbridled yet ethical research in the pursuit of greater knowledge, to younger generations.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself?

A: Live long and prosper.
